This is the exterior of the rear facade Buffalo State Hospital, as seen from behind the fence, where I bribed a security guard with a pack of smokes to open the gate.  Taken during the last strains of nautical twilight as it morphed into astronomical twilight, it highlights the centerpiece of the building - H. H. Richardson’s magnificent “twin tower” administrative pavilion, created in his signature “Richardsonian Romanesque” style.  To the right, connecting to the innermost female ward pavilion, is a curved connector hallway that was one of the great innovations of Richardson’s take on the Kirkbride Plan.  Shame Richardson loved lobster and steak so much - he was morbidly obese, and died of a coronary in his mid-50s.  One wonders what other marvels he might have created; having visited over a dozen of his buildings, every one is remarkable - even the ones that predate the Romanesque that would define his career.
